UK-Japan exchange

UK-Japan exchange

In November, 1994, Japan Groundwork Association and Groundwork UK (hereupon GWUK) signed a memorandum of understanding highlighting a shared understanding of the principles and values of the Groundwork approach, and goals to build sustainable communities based on partnership action. As a symbol of our shared commitment, Japan Groundwork Association too carries the prominent Groundwork logo.
Although there are institutional differences in law, taxation systems and government structure, in addition to differences in culture and tradition between Japan and the UK, there is still much we can learn from each other's skills and experiences.
Established in 2005, the Skills Exchange Programme acts as a forum to exchange best practice to further develop Groundwork in both countries.

Starting in 2005, events for the UK-Japan Skills Exchange Programme have been mainly held at the National Groundwork Training Centre in Mishima City, Shizuoka prefecture. In addition to people affiliated with Groundwork nationally, these events draw participants from all sectors throughout Japan including citizens working to improve their local communities, private sector and government.

Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale, a trust active in the birthplace of Groundwork in northwest England, and Groundwork Mishima first began international exchanges in the early 1990's, leading to a partnership agreement in 2003.
Today, this strong friendship continues with staff/volunteer exchanges and joint projects which help NPO initiatives develop with a greater international perspective in Japan, the UK and beyond.

Since 1994, Groundwork Fukuoka has maintained strong international exchanges with Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff in South Wales near the capital of Cardiff. These two organisations were brought together by a shared challenge; to regenerate their communities facing socioeconomic difficulty following the decline of the local coal industry.
2007 saw the establishment of eco training centres at both Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff and Groundwork Fukuoka. Work is now underway to establish a twinning arrangement between the centres in which skills exchange programmes will be developed.
